Before you start
Read the kit instructions and choose one base. Plan a flat sticker design on the body of the bookmark. Reserve raised pom-poms and rhinestones for a top area that can sit outside the book, or leave them off for a simpler bookmark.
At the craft table
Follow the kit’s age guidance and supervise as appropriate. Pom-poms, rhinestones, adhesive dots, and packaging are small-part or packaging hazards. Keep cords away from the neck and store bags out of reach of young children.
Make it step by step
Pick a base and a small palette
Choose a foam base and two or three sticker colors that stand out against it. Keep all sticker backings on while sorting. Put pom-poms in a tray so they do not roll off the table or mix with discarded backing papers.
Check where the pages will sit
Place the undecorated base in a closed book without forcing the cover. Note which part remains above the pages. Use that area for a raised accent and keep the lower body clear of thick clusters that could press into paper.
Plan the sticker layout
Arrange backed stickers on the bookmark on the table. Choose one main character or shape, then add smaller accents around it. Leave room near the top for the satin cord and keep decorations within the base’s outline where possible.
Attach the largest stickers first
Peel the back from the main foam sticker and press it onto the base. Smooth the center and edges with a fingertip. Continue with smaller stickers, checking each placement before peeling so the self-adhesive pieces do not need repeated repositioning.
Add optional top accents
If you want a pom-pom, attach it with a supplied adhesive dot as directed by the kit, within the area that will sit above the book. Add a small rhinestone accent there too if desired. Keep the bookmark body free of bulky layers.
Fit the satin cord
Attach the cord at the top using the kit’s pictured method and knot. Make a hanging tail or loop as directed, then tug gently over the table to check the connection. Keep the cord clear of any sticker edges that it might pull up.
Check the bookmark and package it
Look for loose decorations and exposed sticky areas. Slip the flat portion between pages gently and keep raised accents outside the book. For gifting, use a supplied bag only if the decorated bookmark fits without bending, then close it with a twist tie and gift sticker.
Make it your own
A flat sticker design is the most useful choice for a bookmark that travels in a bag.
Use a large shape as the focal point and give it a little empty space.
The same bookmark can be hung as a decoration by its cord when it is not marking a page.
Common fixes
The book does not close comfortably.
Remove bulky accents from the page area if they can be lifted cleanly, or keep this piece as a hanging decoration and make a flatter bookmark.
A pom-pom is loose.
Check the kit’s adhesive-dot directions and place it on a clean area at the top. Leave it off if it cannot be secured reliably.
Finish & enjoy
Press all sticker edges down and check the cord before use. Keep the bookmark dry and store it flat rather than folding the foam or forcing it into a tight bag.
